WMATA Comprehensive Escalator Wellway Canopy Competition

The team of Jon Lourie, Richard Chenoweth and Richard Houghton won the national design competition for a new escalator well way canopy design for the Wasington Metrorail system. The competition design criteria included weather protection of the existing escalators, adaptability to various station entrance sizes and to allow for construction/installation while the station was operational. Lourie & Chenoweth/Houghton’s design was selected from over 160 entrants due to its respect for the original Harry Weese system design and its innovative, iconic and compelling image.
