WMATA

WMATA Prototype Canopy Sites and Initial Construction

Lourie & Chenoweth LLC working with Ove Arup Structural Engineers and Grunley Walsh Construction translated the competition entry design to the fabrication and installation at four prototype escalator well way sites. The chosen sites varied in size from the very small, Brookland West, to the very large, National Institutes of Health/Medical Center station. The prototype design effort successfully explored stainless steel frame fabrication and assembly, glazing system design and a fiber-optic lighting system. The canopy design was provided an Award of Excellence by the Washington DC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Lourie & Chenoweth LLC subsequently provided architectural services for the installation of well way canopies at sites throughout the WMATA system.
